Bansefi Financial Literacy Project

The Bansefi Financial Literacy Project in Mexico, a 1 year-long initiative brings together Microfinance Opportunities (MFO), Freedom From Hunger (FFH) and the National Savings and Financial Services Bank (BANSEFI) in Mexico.

BANSEFI has more than 500 branches located throughout Mexico and strives to provide services in areas that do not have access to commercial banking. The bank provides savings accounts that can be opened with less than $5 USD, are exempt from fees and pay market interest rates on balances.

MFO and FFH are developing a financial education module for BANSEFI following the same process used to develop the Global FEP curriculum. In addition, MFO and FFH are working on an interactive DVD similar to the Listening to Clients Series, which can be used to train the staff of financial institutions on how to deliver the financial education materials to their clients. The DVD may also be used as a supplementary learning tool for clients. The project will be completed in 2008.

AMFIU Training-of-Trainers Workshop in Uganda

Global FEP partnered with the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU) to conduct a training-of-trainers workshop in Kampala, Uganda from November 7-16, 2006. AMFIU selected 29 members to attend, with participants coming from various types of organizations. The workshop produced a corps of skilled facilitators who will be able to conduct future training-of-trainers workshops within their organizations.

During the training, participants put their facilitation skills to use and presented a learning session from the financial education curriculum to their peers. Showcasing their creativity in the adaptation of these sessions, the participants employed a variety of delivery channels such as radio call-in shows, public service announcements, literacy campaigns, extension media, music, dance and drama. Workshop participants experienced a live adaptation to dance and drama when the UFCA Cultural Dance Troupe Uganda performed and acted out financial education messages that were developed in partnership with AMFIU/FSDU.
